How are the road conditions from San Jose to Arenal Lodge, is a 4x4 needed? I will be visiting Costa Rica in two months and want to have everything prepared thanks!

Can any one tell me if the rooms at Arenal Lodge in Costa Rica have air conditioning? I will stay at this hotel next month and really want air conditioning.

Are there activities that can be done from the Arenal Lodge, if so, please advise some of them, I am interested in visiting Costa Rica and really want to be in that area and want be able to do some activities from the hotel.

Would like some feedback on experiences while staying at this resort. Are there any local villages near by? Should I rent a car or use a taxi to get to Tamarindo? Will be there 5 days just two womem our husbands are surfing in a different part of Costa Rica. Any advice is appreciated.
