The road conditions are ok. I was there in January 2006 with my mom and sister and we drove ourselves from San Jose to La Fortuna. The road signs are there, you just have to look for them. If I were to do it again (I am bringing my family in April) I would drive it myself. Make sure the car you are driving is a SUV with more than 4 cylinders. You need more gusto to get up the mountains.
