Located in Guanacaste, Playa Grande was first known for Baula, the beautiful marine turtles. These turtles arrive every year at Playa Grande to lay and spawn their eggs. The government created Las Baulas Marine National Park to prevent the loss of this incredible turtle species to over development. You can enjoy this magical spot during the day but at night Playa Grande is handed over to the National Park Patrols. From October to May, their spawning season, they patrol to make sure their eggs are not stolen. Playa Grande is also well known for the ecotourism available in the area, especially because there are many beaches, wild life refuges and volcanoes all around the Guanacaste area. The reason for this is to give spawning turtles peace. While they are headed to the beach at night the bright lights can panicking them cause them to unsuccessfully reproduce. Only 45 minutes away from Playa Grande, is Tamarindo, which known all over the world as a surfing hot spot.
