You take the highway out of San Jose On the General Canas Highway, drive past alajuela and then go on towards Palmares and San Ramon on the way to Puntarenas. Before getting to Puntarenas, at Barranca, take a right turn and continue to Liberia. Before the Lagarto River you’ll see signs to the right pointing you towards Monteverde. You can either drive into San Luis and then up the mountain into the center of Monteverde, or drive upwards to the town of Santa Elena and then Monteverde. From Monteverde you can drive down to San Luis, where a biological station and waterfall will make a fun day trip. From Monteverde and Santa Elena you can also drive towards the Santa Elena Reserve. Other areas you can visit from the Monteverde Cloudforest are the town of Tilaran, drive onto Arenal volcano (about 4 or 5 hours) or head towards the Guanacaste Beaches. The roads in Monteverde are rough and rocky: The Quakers who founded Monteverde, the reserve and the cheese factory believe that making the Cloud Forest easily accessible would affect the ecological balance of the area, so they prefer to keep it so that it doesn’t become a very transited area. You can visit hot springs close to Monteverde in Guacimal, and just driving around the area is pleasurable, there are plenty of spots that may enchant you and provide a type of reward for your hard work.
