The province of Cartago was established by a Spanish Governor in 1563 and was the capitol of our country until 1832. The weather here is much cooler and tends to be drier than other areas around the country. This province has many terrific points of interest, visitors may observe ruins dating back to the 16th century, national monuments and famous pilgrimage sites. Cartago sits about 40 minutes east of San Jose and is known for producing onions, white potatoes, milk and beautiful orchid plants. The horizon is broken by a string of volcanoes, thick tropical forests that harbor a wide variety of fauna and Mount Chirripo, which is the highest mountain in Costa Rica. This ecologically rich region has an urban lifestyle that characterizes its locals. When you visit make sure to pass by the famous Sunday market for a unique, cultural encounter.
