Location and Driving Directions
The Volcan Turrialba Lodge is located in Turrialba Cartago 37 miles (60 km) yet secluded in a hidden valley between Turrialba and Irazu Volcanoes. It is 5 miles (8 km) away from the crater, and 17 miles (34 km) from the town of Turrialba. The access road is restricted to 4 wheel drive vehicles and thet have kept it that way intentionally. The route is clearly posted for those coming on their own. It will take you 1 ½ hours if you are coming from Turrialba, and 2-2 ½ hours coming from San Jose. If you are driving, the fastest route from San Jose is on the Inter American Highway to route 10 to Cartago, you come into town on Avenida 2. At Las Ruinas, turn left and go one block north to Avenida 4, turn right and continue east on it all the way through town until you reach a Y just after calle 16. Bear left across from the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles and the final 19 mile (31 km) climb to Irazu is marked with signs (You'll turn left before Cot and right before Tierra Blanca, so if you reach either of these two hamlets you've missed a turn). Follow the signs to the hotel. You may also take a Metropoli bus from San Jose (8:00 a.m. Avenida 2, Calles 1/3) or Cartago (8:30 a.m. Avenida 2, Calles 2/4) on Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays (November through April there is a Wednesday bus as well). You will have about two and a half hours at the summit; the return bus departs at 12:15 p.m.
