Rafiki Safari Lodge is one of the most beautiful ecotourism lodges of Costa Rica, located at approximately 18.5 miles (30kms) south of Quepos, inside one of the most amazing and outstanding rainforests in the pacific area. Rafiki Safari Lodge is nestled on 750 acres (almost 3.5 square km) of the beautiful Quepos jungle. The fabulous Costa Rican rainforest will give you incredible sights and experiences, such as marvelous waterfalls, impressive flora and fauna, unbelievable sightseeing, a quite big variety of birds and hikes through the many trails that are all over the lodge’s property for your delight and pleasure. You will enjoy the adventurous and magnificent Savegre River wich provides the Rafiki experience with class III and IV whitewater rafting, a must do for those extreme explores looking for new adventures. The Rafiki Safari Lodge is no regular hotel, it is also a Tapir Reintroducing Project where the owners, the Boshoff family, have created a special environment for the tapirs so in a near future they will be able to run again free through the Savegre Valley and why not the Costa Rican many rainforests. Currently there is a corridor exclusively for tapirs passing by called “El Paso de la Danta”.
While staying in Rafiki (wich means “Friend” in Swahili) you can choose from many fun and interesting activities like whitewater rafting, horseback riding, hiking or taking a dive into the river water filled pool, where you can also take advantage of one of the Top 5 water slides of the world: a water slide that begins at the lodge and speeds down 100 feet below the lodge facilities, basically a slide into the jungle!. Among other amazing activities you can indulge yourself with at Rafiki Safari Lodge, we can mention the Braai, and wich is a typical South African BBQ accompanied by the professional local chef’s excellent dishes. After that, you might like to relax by the Lekker bar with a tasty, refreshing beverage. For honeymooners, don’t hesitate on inquiring about the honeymoon accommodations available. The accommodations at Rafiki Safari Lodge are definitely not ordinary, don’t expect the regular lodge rooms you can find anywhere if you decide to take advantage of the amazing Safari settings; visiting Rafiki is quite an experience in every single aspect: “The Rancho” is a plateau with luxury tents, each one with its own unbelievable view of the pristine mountains of Quepos. This spacious Safari Tents are imported all the way from South Africa and are able to accommodate as much as 4 people in the very comfortable way, a way that only the Rafiki experience can provide. Large windows will give you the smells of the rainforest every morning and you will enjoy spectacular bird watching and the nature surroundings just by sitting on your own porch. These fabulous tents are designed to be comfortable and luxurious while keeping all the safari elements of the rainforest adventure intact, without compromising their environment, so you don’t have to worry about anything while you enjoy the amazing experience of actually spending your nights at the jungle. The showers are fire heated so you can take the chill out of the spring water and feel just like at home, a home in the middle of the jungle.
Location and Driving Directions
Rafiki Safari Lodge is located 18.5 miles (30 km) south of Quepos and approximately 99.5 miles (160 km) from down town San Jose. From San Jose travel west on Highway 1 (the Pan American Highway pass the Airport) drive towards San Ramon. Take the exit to Alajuela. Next take the exit right for Atenas - Los Sueños - Jaco (HWY 34). After the exit turn left and go over the over pass. Pass through the town of Atenas, Orotina and Parrita. Follow the well marked Quepos signs all the way into downtown Quepos. You will reach a gas station (last gas station before the lodge), stay straight pass a hospital and the airport. You will cross over 2 major rivers, after the last one, Savegre River, take an immediate left. Drive on, just before reaching a soccer field there is a fork in the road, take a left and follow the lodge signs.
If you are driving yourself to Rafiki Safari Lodge, the best choice is to use a 4x4 vehicle for a 2x4 might not handle the jungle roads to lodge. However if you are driving a 2x4 vehicle the hotel offers a shuttle to help you get there easily. This trip is about 3 to 5 hours from San Jose and 1 hour and a half coming from Quepos depending mostly on the roads traffic and such issues. You can also book a transfer from San Jose to Quepos and the hotel will take of getting you to the facilities and back from anywhere in the Quepos or Manuel Antonio area. There are two transfers a day. Another way is to fly from San Jose to Quepos wich takes only 25 minutes. The hotel provides suitable transportation for you upon request from the airport to the lodge and back. There are daily flights scheduled in the morning and in the afternoon.
