Location and Driving Directions
Drake Bay Wilderness Resort is located on the southwestern corner of the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. South of Drake Bay is the Osa Peninsula that is home to Corcovado National Park. You can fly to Drake Bay’s strip, but you need to make arrangements in advance because the strip is very small and the space to bring people down to the area is limited. The flight duration is approximately 50 minutes from San Jose. Express buses depart form San Jose to Palmar Norte. The terminal is located between 5th Avenue and 14th street, and the bus trips is approximately 6 hours from San Jose. Once in Palmar Norte get the bus to Sierpe. Whether it is that you are driving or taking the bus, you need you need to go to Sierpe and find space on a boat that will take you to Drake Bay.
If you are driving from the Juan Santamaria International Airport or San Jose, take the Inter American Highway towards Palmar to the turnoff for Puerto Jimenez. Then continue on until you get to Rincon, and turn onto the rough road leading into Drake Bay. But if you are coming during the rainy season, it is not recommended to take this road, for it can be damaged by mudslides.
Another route is to take the Inter American Highway towards Perez Zeledon. Once in Perez Zeledon take the road and follow the signs to Dominical. Continue along the coastline south to Punta Uvita, Tortuga Beach, Cortes, and keep driving towards Palmar Norte. Once at the stop sign of the Inter American highway South turn right and cross the bridge turning then right to Sierpe. Follow the road to the Banana Plantations and it will lead you to Sierpe where you will take a boat to Drake Bay.
