If you walk through Barrio Amon you will notice exquisite buildings that reflect different architectural styles. During your tour around this small neighborhood you will find architectural styles that range from a Moorish style castle to Victorian style houses. Hotel Don Carlos rests quietly in Barrio Amon. Before this house turned into a distinctive hotel, Costa Rican president Tomas Guardia once lived here. Inside Don Carlos Hotel, San Jose, Costa Rica will feel like you are in another world. You will hardly believe that outside this shelter of peacefulness is the busy city of San Jose with its busy traffic and street vendors. As you walk past by the reception desk you will enter a secluded hideaway where the trickling water of the fountain will relax you and invite to read a book in the open air terrace. You can shed the day’s tension at Don Carlos as you stroll along the gallery corridors where you can see the fine art on display. The history of this beautiful hotel begins with its founder, Don (Mr.) Carlos Balser, an internationally acknowledged authority on Pre Columbian art, author of many books on Costa Rican archeology and fluent in seven languages. Don Carlos was active in all aspects of the arts, having painted the frescos of the Holy Trinity in the dome of the San Jose Metropolitan Cathedral. After managing the Gran Hotel, Don Carlos decided to start his own pension called Pension Canada in 1947. Since then Hotel Don Carlos has made a strong effort to offer its guests high quality service.
