Location and Driving Directions
Hotel Cala Luna Hotel is located on the Northwestern shoreline of Costa Rica, in Tamarindo, Guanacaste 193 miles (312 km) from San Jose. Just to the north of Tamarindo lies Playa Grande which is one of the principal nesting sites for leatherback turtles. As you head south from Tamarindo, you'll come to several undeveloped beaches, most of which are quite popular with surfers. Beyond Tamarindo and Playa Langosta are Playa Avellanas and then Playa Negra, both of which have a few basic cabinas catering to surfers. It takes around 4 hours to drive to Tamarindo Beach. Driving from San Jose, you can head west passing the San Jose International Airport. You should follow the signs to San Ramon continuing on the road which turns north, along the Inter American Highway. Follow the sign to Liberia. Arriving in Liberia you will come to a traffic light on the highway with 2 gas stations, a Burger King and Papa Jones Pizza on the corners. From the traffic light, make a left (Highway 21) and head west along the main road to the beaches. 12 miles (19 km) down the road you will come to an intersection in the town of Comunidad, follow the signs to Playa Flamingo and Playa Tamarindo and stay to the left. This route will take you through the town of Filadelfia and on to the smaller town of Belen about 12 miles further. Keep an eye out for the big green, blue and white signs that say Tamarindo. Turn right after the signs. Continue for 18 miles (30 km) to Huacas. Turn left at Huacas. From Huacas you will continue to Villarreal. Turn right at the signs for Playa Tamarindo. Continue 2 miles on the dirt road to Tamarindo and follow the signs to the hotel. You can also fly to Tamarindo from Juan Santamaria International Airport. It is only 45 minute flight to Tamarindo’s domestic airport. From there you can take a taxi to Cala Luna Hotel.
