Costa Rica sportfishing vacations are easy when we can arrange hotels, charter boats, let you know the up to date reports and make any reservations for you. There are many reasons why sport fishing is popular, and Costa Rica such a favored destination. For anglers it represents a way to relax, an escape or release from daily hassles, a way to spend time with friends, family and loved ones. Others do it for the competition factor: not only in tournaments, where they compete with other anglers, but on a day to day basis in a primal battle for supremacy between human and fish. Many see it as a hobby with a tangible benefit: anglers can also eat some of the specimens they catch. Although sportfishing in the broadest sense of the word is the practice of fishing based on the techniques and skills necessary for the capture, not centered on fish for consumption or sale, it doesn’t mean that an angler cannot fish for food species and enjoy the fruits of his or her labor. Sports also provide variety: you can practice deep sea or off shore saltwater , or for the food species you can take a shot at spear fishing your next meal. Since sport fishing is done mainly with rods and reels, not using nets or other aids, many anglers believe that eating what has been fished by them after a grueling one on one struggle is more respectful to the fish than buying a filet at a supermarket. So the common practice for big game sportfishing in Costa Rica is the catch and release of endangered species, especially marlin and sailfish, and in case of fishing for food species, to keep what you can eat and release the rest. We can arrange sport charters, accommodations close to the docks, and tours on the side for a wonderful sportsfishing vacations: from Lake Arenal to Flamingo tell us what you wish to do and we’ll make it happen!

Sport fishing for big game in offshore expeditions generally involves going deep sea fishing, and once the fish are found, to trolling them with baited hooks dragged behind the 30-50 foot long boat on multiple lines placed on outriggers at either side of the vessel. Once a fish falls for the trick, and swallows the bait with hook, the fishermen attempts to reel it in. In Costa Rica, there is a slight variation to this technique that involves switching the bait: the bait that is trolled is hookless, and when a fish is attracted to it, the experienced skippers pull in the bait and substitute it with baits with hooks, on rods, so they can get the feel on when the billfish has fallen for the trick and then snag them in the soft palate for minimum damage. Anglers can decide if they wish to use game chairs or if they feel up to the greater challenge, they can also fish standing with a harness. We can help you book fishing charter boats in many different towns and areas in Costa Rica: Quepos, Tamarindo, Flamingo Drake Bay or Corcovado for saltwater fishing, Arenal Lake and Barra del Colorado in the Caribbean North for freshwater fishing, and either offshore or inshore , half day or full day tours, fly, baiting fish, trolling or even spear fishing, let us know what you wish to do and where, and we can hook you up with the best fishing charters in the country.
