The University for Peace in costa Rica is affiliated with the United Nations. The system of face to face teaching in diverse areas of peace studies towards graduate degrees is only one of the different ways in which you can take part at the Universidad para la Paz education. There’s a dissemination programme through Sharing Knowledge for Peace in diverse activities and regional Programmes for international audiences. The University for Peace was established in 1980 by Costa Rica president Rodrigo Carazo and through the United Nations. The Honorary President of the University for Peace is Kofi A. Annan, and made many efforts to reorganize, strengthen and internationalize the university since early 1999. The program at the Universidad para la Paz is established by the Peace Council, and it is based on education, training and research for peace focusing on key issues such as conflict prevention, human security, human rights, environmental security and post-conflict rehabilitation. The guiding concepts of the academic programmes is to create new knowledge, and to extend that knowledge throughout the world. Thus, higher teaching and research are central to the mission of the University. You can achieve Master Level diplomas in Environmental Security and Peace, Gender and Peace Building, International Law and Human Rights, International Law and Settlement of Disputes, International Peace Studies, Media, Conflict and Peace Studies, Natural Resources and Sustainable Development as well as Peace Education.
