The Universidad Estatal a Distancia or UNED is a distance learning school. Created as a service for adults who due to work couldn’t assist regular lessons at other universities, but who required the higher education. Students sign up for lessons and receive materials for their courses, then on certain days the present their papers and take tests at the UNED center. There are different offices spread throughout Costa Rica. The degrees at the UNED are in the areas of Education, Administration, Social sciences and humanities, exact and natural sciences as well as Master degrees in these and other areas. To study at the UNED as a first time student you’ll need a high school diploma or equivalent and to present yourself to one of the main offices: in January for the first quatrimester, y May for the second and in September for the third. If you are a student then you have the option to do it over the phone. You can also study at the UNED even if you don’t live in Costa Rica. Just present yourself to sign up for the courses, and pay the fees, plus a courier mail fee so you can be sent the tests: you or a representative can pick up you study material and just follow the curriculum. For testing, UNED would contact the Costa Rican embassy in your country. In their efforts to universalize education, the UNED has programs to enroll students in correctional facilities throughout Costa Rica so they can reintegrate themselves into society with tools to succeed.
