EARTH University Costa Rica is a private, non profit university dedicated to educating in natural resources and agricultural science to contribute to the sustainable development of the humid tropical forests: where environmental protection and agricultural production can coexist in harmony. Costa Rica EARTH University seeks the best and brightest students in each of the 19 countries, targeting most of the search to rural and poor communities. That’s why more than half of the students at EARTH belong to families with incomes below the poverty level. Many are not only the first in their families to receive higher education, but are also the first in their entire community or village. One of the greatest accomplishments is that roughly two thirds of the graduates at EARTH University proceed to work in rural and poor areas throughout Latin America, where their hard work and knowledge is vital: their leadership and business skills are the catalyst to improving the lifestyles and quality of life of entire communities. EARTH University, Costa Rica, began in 1990 in an 8 155 acre finca or property. The campus itself is 321 acres and includes 538 195.5 square feet of buildings including labs, classrooms, common areas, academic areas, residential areas and other facilities. What is done with the remaining area? It is the open air lab the students can work on. It includes a biological reserve and conservation area, pasturelands, plantations and other locations where students can practice hands on agricultural, cattle and forestry activities in projects which can generate income to support the academic program at EARTH University. Costa Rica will become the home for 100 new students every year: you could be one of them.
