Click to enlargeIf you are interested in getting a Costa Rica driver license or validate yours, these are the requirements needed to do so:
Applying for a Driver’s License for Foreigners for the First Time:
It is possible to get a Costa Ricadriver license by showing your own driver’s license and a full medical check document, yet it is easier and better to present the following:
- Up to date passport with valid incoming visa for a period of 3 months, residency ID card or any other document that proves that you are in fact a resident even if temporary
- Your own up to date license with a photocopy.
- Medical certificate for drivers.
- An authorization from the Jefatura o Subjefatura of the License Department or from the Director of the Dirección General de Educación Vial.
- In case your license is expired and from you another country than Costa Rica, you will also have to take the practical driving test.
Renovation of Driver’s License for Foreigners
In order to renovate you expired Costa Rican driver’s license you will need:
- Medical Certificate.
- Valid ID card, residency cedula, valid passport, temporary residency permit or any other document that proves your current migratory status.
- The license you wish to renovate or validate.
All of these documents are to be presented at the Ministerio de Obras Publicas y Transportes (MOPT) at the license department.
