In 1981, the Chamber of Industries and the Costa Rican coffee Company (CAFESA in Spanish) and Von Breymann, Torres y Asociados, S.A. established the Banco Agro Industrial de Exportaciones, S.A. (BANEX) to fulfill mostly the following needs: a) to serve the agriculture and industrial areas in their effort to produce and export no traditional product to other markets; b) operate focusing on the economical benefits and supporting de development of the country; c) manage their businesses with the best ethical standards and professionals in all their services.
Starting in 1986 they have grown with many services such as Banex Valores Puesto de Bolsa, S.A in 1986, Fiduciaria de Ahorro Banex in 1988, and the Cuenta Maestra Banex in 1992.
In 1997 Banex Costa Rica joins the Corporación Continental ABC, S. A. To generate positive synergies, taking advantage of the joint business; with this fusion, they created the Comercialización de Seguros (insurance marketing).
In June of 1999, Banco Banex Costa Rica joins the Banco del Istmo Panamá and with this Banex becomes a part of the Grupo Istmo de Panama, this fusion was official in the year 2000, giving 30 000 million colones in actives.
They also acquire the Corporación Metropolitana making the medium and small entrepreneur sector much stronger.
In Costa Rica, Banco Banex offers full services, has branches all over the metropolitan area and also provides it costumer with easy access internet banking.
