Playa del Coco Costa Rica
Playa del Coco is one of the most easily accessible beaches in Guanacaste. It is located 22 miles (35 km) west of Liberia with good road connections which is quite rare in Costa Rica. Playa del Coco’s paved road runs down to the water and its seashore has grayish-brown sand. It takes around 5 hours to get to this beach on a bus from San Jose The nearest flight arrives in Liberia Once you have arrived into this Costa Rican airport, take a private shuttle to your final destination. The area consists of a horseshoe-shaped bay with steep hills and cliffs dotted with beach resorts, condos and hotels. It is a good place to have fun but not to be alone, so if you are searching for a quiet retreat, stay away from the center of town. There are plenty of boats anchored here, and that means plenty of opportunities to go fishing on half and full day excursions that include a boat, captain, food and tackle. The beach is quite wide at low tide and almost nonexistent at high tide. In between high and low tide, it’s just right! It was the first pacific beach to hit the big time with weekending Costa Ricans from the Central Valley.
Diving is the most popular water sport in Playas del Coco. The high season for scuba diving is from April through to September. The nearby Catalinas and Bat Islands are the hot sites to see turtles, sharks and octopus. Another good water sport to practice here is sailing. There is no surfing whatsoever at Coco Beach, but it is a popular jumping off point for daily boat trips to Witches Rock and Ollies Point. The view from the bay includes Pelonas Islands, Cacique Point to the northwest and Cantinela Point. Other attractions are nearby Hermosa, Ocotal and Panama beaches of Guanacaste.
There are many things to do and see in Guanacaste. Rincon de la Vieja is accessible for a day tour. Go on horseback to boiling “pailas” where hot water mixes with earth and the “fumarolas” which release smoke through natural chimneys. Enjoy a mineral mud bath followed by a naturally steaming sauna, and then take a rejuvenating swim in the thermal pools heated by the volcano for a healthy, beautifying and very relaxing experience. In Playas del Coco you can find different options of accomodation in affordable price ranges. Old-fashioned and modern hotels, or condo rentals, plus camping areas are available. And you can find good restaurants with a variety of restaurants with different options of food and budget.
