If your goal is to visit Corcovado National Park during your vacations, Carate is where you want to travel and lodge. Be prepared for heavy rains from April to December. There are three entry points to the park. On the northwest corner San Pedrillo, Los Patos on the northern end and La Leona on the southeast end. Due to its hot and humid climate, the trees can grow up to 230 ft. high. Hiking in different areas of the park can take days, but if you are in a good condition it is worth it. You can visit the park on a one day tour and spend the night at a lodge or hotel in Carate or other neighboring towns outside the park. Costa Rica provides wonderful locations to visit, and Carate is one of the best kept sites. Imagine watching tapirs taking a walk along the shore, or seeing the orcas arrive in the warm Costa Rican waters of Drake Bay. Or take a shot at scuba diving around Cano Island or deep sea sports fishing for the largest animals in the Costa Rican coast.
Hotels and lodging in Carate, Costa Rica, generally provide transportation facilities from Puerto Jimenez, or you can take a regular taxi or a 4WD taxi. If you travel by plane you will land on a small airstrip and head towards Carate and Corcovado from there. It is recommended for you to make transportation arrangements before you head into the area, and try to avoid driving a rental car in these areas, since if it breaks down, servicing could take days. Another attraction in the area is the Isla Del Cano Biological Reserve. The island, about 9 miles (15 km) off shore from Corcovado, not only preserves its flora and fauna but its archeological treasures. Costa Rican archeologists found that the island was used as a burial ground from 220 A.D to 1500 A.D. The mysterious stone spheres are what most attract tourists to the Isla Del Cano. These perfectly round stone spheres have thrilled scientists for years since they are not sure how they where so accurately made or their purpose. Many theories have been developed over the years. Some say that the spheres where crafted as astrological instruments used to build calendars. Other theories involve past alien visitors who used the spheres as landing site locators.
