Caño Island Biological Reserve is located 15 km. off the Osa Peninsula. The island has white sandy beaches and a well protected inshore reef that makes it a great snorkeling spot. Visibility of about 65 ft., assures clear sightings of fish, turtles, manta rays, dolphins and whales. Tall trees and Pre-Columbian tombs are scattered along the trail. The island was used by ancient indigenous people as a burial site and many mysterious spherical stones of varying sizes have been found on the island. Depart early in the morning up to the town of Sierpe. Stop to have breakfast (not included). Then aboard a covered boat that will take you through mangrove swamps, past Drake Bay and the Marenco Biological Reserve, inhabited by crocodiles, snakes, monkeys, and birds. After arriving at the island you will snorkel for an hour, followed by a tasty picnic lunch. For the second part of the trip you can hike up the trails to the archeological cemetery or try another session of great snorkeling or stay on the beach. Then you will head back to Dominical.
