Please click on the Carate map to view it in a different window you can zoom into. Carate is located at the end of the road in the Osa Peninsula. Driving there absolutely requires a four wheel car, since you will eventually have to cross streams, rivers and more. When you stay at Carate, you may want to take the back roads and go into the different towns that dot the tip of this peninsula, and maybe grab a bite to eat at a local soda or eatery. You can also drive to the Corcovado National Park, or go spend the day in Puerto Jimenez, the largest town in this area. From Puerto Jimenez you can go on to Golfito, a free trade zone and port town. From Carate you cannot go on the outside to Drake Bay, you need to drive back to Cabo Matapalo, Puerto Jimenez, La Palma and Rincon, before heading out to the west and into Drake Bay. The area of Peninsula de Osa surrounds the Golfo Dulce, where killer whales and humpbacked whales come in and scratch themselves against the stony bottom of the gulf. Please remember to be very careful when driving in this area and watch the weather, since whenever rivers you crossed easily on the way to your destination may be harder to cross on the way back if the water levels rise. Remember you cannot cross international borders with a rental car, just in case you wish to go and visit Paso Canoas, the border between Panama and Costa Rica.
