The area south of Limon has beautiful beaches surrounded by swaying palm trees, and extensive coral reefs. Cahuita Costa Rica has become famous for the Cahuita National Park. There are two entrances to this Park: one is through the MINAE’s main gate, where you will be charged a fee, the other is the closest, across a bridge right in town where you only need to pay a voluntary fee to enjoy the park’s amenities. As you can see on this Cahuita map, if you drive south from the town you will get to the popular Puerto Viejo Costa Rica, a beach town famous for the Salsa Brava wave right in front of the town, where coral reefs add levels of difficulty to tame this tubular wave. The sand in Puerto Viejo is volcanic and black. Beyond is Punta Uva, a dreamscape of beach. The covelike Punta Uvita has a wall of vegetation on one side and trails you can take to view waterfalls and the amazing panoramic view of the beach and surroundings, as well as non existent waves. Beyond Punta Uva is Manzanillo, where the road ends. The beach at manzanillo is cream colored sand with breaking waves in azure blue tones. If you are in Cahuita, you can also drive down an alternative road to Sixaola , the border town before getting to Panama. Please remember that when using a Costa Rica rental car you cannot cross international borders.
