Click on the Cabo Matapalo map of the Costa Rican south to view an enlarged version. Located in the tip of the Osa Peninsula near Golfo Dulce, you’ll find Cabo Matapalo. The Map shows you the location of the Cabo Matapalo across the gulf from Punta Banco, an extreme surfing spot with the longest left break in Costa Rica, a 1.5 Km. long wave. But on Cabo Matapalo you’ll find a point break that has made it famous with surfers. Driving to Cabo Matapalo requires preparation and a reliable four wheel car since it can take about 8 or 9 hours of driving time. Drive south from San Jose in the direction to Cartago and then continue to San Isidro del General and then towards the town of Paso Real. From Paso Real, drive to the West towards the town of Palmar Norte. Then go south to Chacarita, and turn towards Rincon and Puerto Jimenez. Twelve miles after Puerto Jimenez you’ll reach the world renowned point of Cabo Matapalo. The vegetation, wildlife and nature in this area is very similar to the one found in Corcovado, thanks to a natural corridor connecting Matapalo to the world renowned national park, however to drive over there you have to backtrack to Rincon and then go over to Drake Bay, making it quite a long drive and not leaving you with time to explore the park. However, being in Cabo Matapalo you’ll be surrounded by nature at its wildest: the forested areas in this point still appear as they have throughout the ages, so plan to stay in this surrounding area if you drive up to Costa Rica Cabo Matapalo. You can also get here by flying into Puerto Jimenez and then getting a taxi to the area, but keep in mind that unless you are staying at one of the resorts you will have to carry in everything with you since the only stores are in Puerto Jimenez.
