The Esquinas forest is categorized as a “lowland tropical wet forest“ and contains the higher density of trees (over 140 species per hectare) in Costa Rica and a total of 2.500 species of plants! You will hike through secondary forest with a wide array of heliconias, ferns, and other plants which need much light. The longer trails lead into primary forest, passing by walking palms, buttress roots, giant trees with epiphytic orchids and bromeliads, passion flowers, and endless lianas. There is a good chance to see colorful birds, such as parrots, trogons or toucans, shiny butterflies, bizarre insects, frogs, or possibly monkeys, agouti-pacas, peccaries, sloths, coatimundis, tayras and other animals. Some lucky hikers have even seen ocelots and anteaters. However, don't expect to experience what you are used to seeing on TV films about the rainforest. Take your time to look at small details: leaves, blossoms, insects...and you will be fascinated by the biodiversity of a living tropical rainforest. |
